The Act is an American true crime drama television show produced by Hulu. The series consists of eight episodes, the first of which premiered on March 20, 2019. The final episode has a release date of May 1, 2019. Gypsy Blanchard (Joey King), confined to a wheelchair due to illness, is the main character of the show. As she grows older and demands more independence, her relationship with her overbearing mother (Patricia Arquette) begins to sour. She resisted when the mother who had raised her her entire life became more possessive, aggressive, and controlling, especially when trying to explore her sexuality (Adelgaard, 2019). The relationship becomes more toxic as Gypsy learns more of the truth. She was never sick, even though she thought she had cancer from an early age. Not only did her mother, Dee Dee, successfully trick Gypsy into believing she was ill, but so did her family, friends, and doctors. She may have imposed an artificial barrier on the other person, a mental illness in which the caregiver exaggerates or fabricated the other person’s illness. Munchausen agency syndrome was the term for the disorder at the time and is still common today. After Gypsy asks her boyfriend to murder her mother, the story inevitably ends in murder (Karina, 2020). continue…
