Developmental Biology

The study of how multicellular organisms grow and develop under the direction of their genes is called developmental biology. Understanding typical developmental processes can help understand abnormal development and related diseases such as cancer. Creation of multicellular organisms from a single fertilized cell requires extensive cell division, growth, differentiation and regional specification. After a sperm fertilizes an egg, blastomeres form rapidly by fission (Protze et al., 2019). Signaling molecules and transcription factors promote the growth and differentiation of pluripotent embryonic stem cells into progenitor cells from which all cell types in mature organisms arise (Lack & Dale, 2021). Regional specification occurs during gastrulation, when controlled cell migration forms the germ layers (ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm). While adhesion molecules and proteases regulate cell migration and tissue formation into their characteristic shapes, morphogens generate gradients of environmental signals that influence the emergence of embryonic patterning and cell fate decisions. continue…
