Medical Errors – The 3rd Largest Cause of Death in the U.S.!
We have learned in our course work that medical errors are the third largest cause of death in the U.S. today. How do we begin to reverse those numbers that have continued to grow over the last twenty years, even with a renewed focus on reducing them?
Dr. Atul Gwande is an internationally known writer and speaker who shares his thoughts here on how we begin to “heal medicine”.

To heal our bodies In Atul Gawande’s “How can we heal the medical profession?” believes that we need to take on new values that include respect for others and discipline as well as teamwork (Gawande 2012). To reach the new standards requires a well-organized system. When he started his presentation, Gawande discussed the evolution of the medical system in the United States. Gawande does this by not only examining the facts of the present and past as well as using Lewis Thomas “The Most Young Sciences” to help the audience to understand the change of the modern to the old within the medical field. Gawande’s lecture substantiates his theories about the context of traditional medicine as well as his examination of how this context influenced the values of traditional medicine (Gawande 2012). Atul asserts that we need to adopt new values, like humility and discipline as well as collaboration, if we are going to be able to practice medical practice that heals. To reach the new standards also requires a well-organized system. Cont…
