Explain whether this has changed from the time you started the program to now.
The reading for this week focuses on the three primary philosophical schools of pragmatism, positivism, and realism. We will start by describing pragmatism as the philosophy that emphasizes how understanding should be applied to real-world situations. In other words, for pragmatism to be true, an idea must be effective in practice (Josset, n.d.). Additionally, according to Cline (2019), positivism holds that all philosophical ideas should be evaluated based on their applications and successes in reality rather than on abstract ideas (para. 1). My own experience with pragmatism can be exemplified by a myth that exists in my culture to the effect that whistling at night tends to attract evil spirits. Even though it is not technically true, in my opinion, accepting it as true could be useful in a particular situation. Positivism, on the other hand, emphasizes absolute certainty and confidence in something, and it is the second school of thought. The father of positivism, Comte, believed that in order for us as individuals to achieve our shared goal, we must also develop our ability to appreciate and create the lovely, our capacity to carry out those social duties that we typically categorize as practical, as well as our intelligence and the sudden realization of scientific knowledge (Mellone, 1897).
