In class exercise
Youare employed by a new Space Startup company (make up the name) and you areworking on the companys first project, a small CubeSat (1U) that will deliverspace to the people. In order to assure further funding for the first 100satellites in the constellation you are hereby tasked to initiate the firststep of the process. To plan the development and execution of the design, fabrication, launch and operation of the first 100 satellites.
Thescenario is based on that you now have evaluated the 100 prototypes and planto go full scale with your concept. The in-class project focused on pitchingyour idea of launching 100 prototype 1U satellites. You can now assume that youhave performed that project, that it to a large extent was successful and thatyou now will launch the full array of satellites. For example,4000 satellitesover the next 4 years.
Make upthe scenario and make sure it is included in the background/charter chapter. Usethe templates and material from NASA, base the report on the SEMP template andthe PP&C document from Nasa. You may modify the templates and data to theappropriate level of the Space Start-up that you are running. And the scenariodictates that you are now fully responsible for all parts of the SEMP/PMP.
Your SEMPand PMP (one document) could follow the template provided in the appendix J(Nasa Systems Engineering handbook). The SEMP needs to be combined with moredetailed project management content (Called PP&C in Nasa language)
Createyour own structure (use one from Nasa or your company). The selected templateshould contain:
– CharterThe charter includesthe introduction and background and scope of the project (which should include):
o Executive Summary,
o Objectives (Goal statement), Concept of Operation.
o NTCP diagram (and motivation)
o Description of the organization (and project background)
o Needed resources/competences.
o Main stakeholders, stakeholder analysis (requirements)
– WBS – Work Breakdown Structure (including all projectrelevant tasks and deliveries and aligned with product structure, lifecycle andproject organization)
– Risk assessment
o (Focus on the most important risks and make a detailed analysis andmitigation strategy for 2-5 of them).
– Project Time Plan (normallybased on the WBS)
o Rolling wave plan may be used, (i.e. General long-term plan and amore detailed plan for the next 1-6 months)
o The overall plan can be a Gantt chart. However it is recommended touse a network plan for the detailed level (next 1-6 months).
o See template from Nasa, remove redundancies.
o Follow up and reportingstrategy
Thereport may need additional sections with respect of your selected product andcontext. You may review The ISO15288 standard for proper content. The reportshould be complete (to an appropriate level, useful for the targeted organization). It should also be balanced to ensure that the chapters are aligned, and that thesame and comparable level of detail is presented in all chapters.
– All figures and tables must beexplained and introduced in text
– A balance at about 50/50regarding text and figures is probably adequate.
– You are allowed to attachappendixes for clarification (but they will normally not be considered whendoing the assessment of the PMP/SEMP)
– Keep the SEMP/PMP core documentat maximum 30 pages.
You mayadd comments. Preferably as numbered footnotes that are presented in the textor at the report or in anappendix(if longer than a few lines). Thistext/appendix is not included in the overall word count.
