Infections that affect any part of the urinary system are called urinary tract infections ( urinary tract infection). The urinary system consists of the bladder, urethra, and kidneys (Brusch, 2021). In most cases, a UTI infection affects the bladder and urethra. The bacteria that commonly cause UTIs are Escherichia coli (E. coli), which live in the gastrointestinal tract. Using a urinary catheter increases the risk of UTI. UTI-causing bacteria can be introduced into the bladder during catheterization, post-placement procedures, or passage through a drainage system (Brown, 2019). The longer the catheter remains in the bladder, the greater the risk of UTI. Catheters can also cause mucosal irritation, increasing the likelihood of a UTI. Finally, they can provide a biofilm surface for bacteria to adhere to and promote UTI-causing bacterial colonization.

It is important to take the full course of antibiotics, even if you feel better. When it comes to UTIs, symptoms usually go away soon after antibiotics are started because they start fighting the infection quickly. However, they take longer to completely kill bacteria (Jacob, 2021). If a person does not complete the course, the infection may recur. Bacteria may also become resistant to antibiotics and not respond to treatment in the future.
