Our project is an analysis based on the sexual rights related theory of Diane Richardson. Through the process of working on this project, we have developed a deeper understanding about the sexual rights claims, which are conduct-based rights claims, identity-based rights claims and relationship-based rights claims respectively. To use a simple sentence to conclude what we have learned — Everyone has the right to decide their sexual preferences, regardless of age, race, gender and sexual orientation, and everyone holds their own decision of participating in any type of sexual engagement and expressing their sexual feelings without intervention. Moreover, we understand that these rights are actually connected with each other as we believe that conduct affects identity while identity affects the relationship of one’s with another. But most importantly, it has given us a chance to reflect on the social issues related to sexual rights. We should respect all kinds of people even if they have a different perspectives in sex and we should try to undertstand them, because everyone is equal and our society needs to advocate sexual equality more instead of showing hatred and discrimination.
During our presentation, we can see that classmates from mainland did not want to participate in the discussion relating to the topic, “sex, gender and the body. In our opinion, it is because of the rather conservative sexual education and culture in China. This is one of the limitations for our presentation to be presented in a Chinese society, it will be hard for Chinese to relate to such right claims they deserve. The right claims claimed in our presentation are more of a western concept, where they value individual well being and their attitude towards sex related topics are more open. While sex and gender identities is a rather prohibited topic in the Chinese society, instead, they are more closely related and value more on relationships (family, siblings, friends, etc.
The questions posed in the Q&A section have been addressed effectively Further, several examples were presented as part of the responses to the questions. For example, in the question relating to children choosing their own gender , revealing about the right to self-definition .This makes it possible for the audience to understand and think about why children reserve the right to choose their own gender. The children could also be allowed to choose their identity themselves given that this is a fundamental right. One of the audience also commented that children can be confused if they are not educated from a relatively young age. Also, there was the question about the legality of sexual workers in Hong Kong. For this question, practice conduct-based rights were used in order to justify the legality of sex work in Hong Kong. In this case, there were explanations of the right that sex workers and their clients have in relation to sex work. The final question relate to a video presetation of the ‘小A辣’, which indicates the identifiation of the right claim being presented. For instance, some of the elements mentioned in the video relate to sexual activity , sexual practice in relationships and the ability to freely choose sexual partners. Thus, it was possible to identify the right claims in the video ,which was accompanied by a detailed description.
Confucianism is deeply rooted in Chinese traditions and cultures, male having to carry on their ancestral line is a common expectation under the long term “one child policy”. Based on confucian text and the policy, women do not have the same social class as men and females are always a “burden” and “tragedy” to a family. Thus, by tradition moral values, individuals that do not possess the desire to bear and raise children, eg. homosexuals are considered unfilial and acceptable. As mentioned above, Chinese value relationships over individuals. Thus they oppress their own sexual desire to fulfill their parents’ expectations of performing ancestral practices.
