Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that is released into the atmosphere in large quantities when fossil fuels are burned. Global warming is caused by greenhouse gases trapping heat in the atmosphere (Al-Ghussain, 2019). The world’s average temperature has already risen by 1°C. Further sea level rise, severe weather, loss of biodiversity, species extinction, food shortages, declining health and increased poverty are all risks associated with warming above 1.5°C. Fossil fuels are formed from the decomposition of buried carbon-based organisms that died millions of years ago (Martins et al., 2018). They produce carbon-rich deposits that are extracted and burned for energy. They currently provide approximately 80% of the world’s energy and are non-renewable. They can also be used to create a variety of items including plastic and steel. Coal, oil and natural gas are three forms of fossil fuels.
