Using the version of the Epic of Gilgamesh required for this course, complete ONE of the following:
1) Although the Epic is fragmented, scholars have managed to put together the continuous narrative that we have today. Reading the Epic as a cohesive whole, what do you find to be the key theme? What is the narrator of the Epic trying to get their audience to consider once they have finished hearing/reading the narrative?
2) Unlike the biblical version in Genesis, the story of the flood in Gilgamesh is told in the first person. Now, retell the story of Enkidu in the first person. Imagine he dictates his story to Gilgamesh as they await his death together and Gilgamesh records it for posterity. What would Enkidu say about his life and what he learned about becoming a man?
NOTE: There is no rubric for this assignment because one choice is creative and one is analytical. Be aware, however, that you will be penalized for spelling and grammar errors. You need to show evidence of having read the Epic carefully and of having reflected on its meaning.
