In 1947 India was divided into India and Pakistan which were Hindu and Muslim respectively. Immediately began one of the largest migrations in the world, with each group migrating to their respective states, resulting in mutual genocide due to religious differences between the two parties. Sikh and Hindu refugees from Punjab have poured into Delhi, which is mostly Muslim. The influx of refugees from west Punjab has brought horrific stories of arson, murder and rape and has won the sympathy of Delhi’s faithful, who have retaliated violently against the dominant Muslims there. While the arriving Hindus sought the sanctuary they needed, the Muslims were driven from their homes. Some 323,320 non-Muslim refugees entered the country between August and October 1947 (Zamindar 30). Hindus also burned Muslim houses and took them over.

Most Muslims fled their homes in Delhi without any possessions to Muslim refugee camps like Purana Qila, from where they boarded trains to Pakistan. This led to a refugee crisis. Due to the lack of relief supplies, this is the most famous Muslim refugee camp, unable to feed the residents here. Government officials also advised most Muslims to move to the camps for their own safety. The state also established Muslim areas and provided security for them.
