Lateral violence can be seen as discrete and overt in the healthcare setting. Discrete violence might look like being intentionally humiliated, being gossiped about, or having your opinions be ignored (Yoder-Wise, p.250). Overt violence can include things like shouting or threatening harm, nonverbal intimidation, or being accused of making errors (Yoder-Wise, p.250). Violence of any kind in the healthcare setting can greatly impact the care a patient receives.
In the healthcare setting we can see lateral violence when certain job roles are seen as better than another role. Kathleen mentioned in her Ted Talk that a housekeeping staff member saved a patient’s life (16:30). Being able to see all of the staff members as essential parts of the healthcare team will ensure that patients get the best care possible. Teamwork is huge in the healthcare field. An example of discrete violence in the healthcare setting would be gossiping around the unit with other staff members. Kathleen explained an example of gossip about a new nurse ending in a patient getting hurt (7:43). This new nurse made an error that could have been avoided if she had the support of her coworkers. A safe work environment is one where staff members feel comfortable asking for help when they are unsure about something without making them feel foolish. An example of overt violence in the healthcare setting would be one staff member threatening to physically harm another staff member for any reason.
A situation like this might arise if one nurse accuses another nurse of making an error without any evidence. Knowing how to address certain situations appropriately can prevent chances of violence between staff.
I think as new nurses it is important to stand up for ourselves. While we won’t have the same amount of experience as some of our coworkers, we have worked hard to get the title of a registered nurse. I think finding a mentor or trustworthy coworker on the unit you work on would help build confidence. Being able to ask questions is an important part of learning. If I were to run into a situation where I was getting bullied I would remind the nurse that I am new and still learning. I would appreciate and encourage any advice the other nurses had to offer.
