Patient safety is the most important factor in all medical settings and healthcare professionals must take every step to ensure that patients are safe and comfortable. But, clinical errors account for more than 250,000 deaths per year across the United States (Sorrell, 2017). Even though cancer, cardiac and respiratory illnesses were the top causes of death prior to the present, an rise the number of errors in medicine has changed this trend. In this instance, clinical errors are now among the top three causes of death of patients (Sorrell 2017, 2017). This paradigm shift signals the need to tackle the ethical issue of medical errors. Standards and tenets that are multiple require health professionals to be cautious about harming patients. The limitations and controls put healthcare professionals within the difficult position of balancing benefits and risks when handling patient (Sorrell 2017, 2017). However the fact that every health professional must address the ethical issue of errors in the clinic using all methods to improve public health. Health professionals must use care-based ethics and rights-based ethics in order to tackle the ethical issues associated with errors in clinical care. Care-based ethics are based on rationality in dealing with moral dilemmas and making decisions as well as rights-based ethics that involves the respect of people’s rights. The first step is to adopt the idea of safety for patients.
