Ethics are rules that govern how we think and behave. They are subject to a variety of social, legal and moral standards. Although the definition of right varies depending on culture and environment, there are a few fundamental principles most people involved in the community and service sector will agree upon. Most hospitals and doctors require informed consent before a patient is allowed to undergo any major medical procedure (e.g. surgery). The patient has the right to know about his or her medical condition, treatment options, potential consequences, and other possible outcomes. In Hamilton and Maliphol, 222, patients have the option to reject medical treatment. Participants have the same rights for all treatments and services, unless a court or authority requires them to participate. Participants have the right to be informed about the subject of research and how the data will be reviewed.
