Early intervention, before more serious symptoms develop, has been shown to be the most effective strategy for helping people with substance use problems and at-risk drug users. This understanding has led to the expansion of substance abuse screening into primary care, where it can help identify developing problems and initiate timely treatment. With the integration of these services into mainstream healthcare, more appropriate, evidence-based treatments, behavioral interventions and support services are now available for people with addiction problems and disorders. However, lack of resources, inadequate training and staffing shortages hinder widespread use of these services (Saunders et al., 2022).
