Jobs:

Each member of the group is responsible for contributing their own research and data to the project, as well as assuming one or more of the following roles:

Group Leader – Guide the direction of the team. Keep contact information and ensure the group members all have the most current version of the report to turn in. Coordinate with the instructor by Canvas In-box to provide regular updates on progress. Read the final report for submission readiness. Substitute in for another member if they are unable to complete their job responsibility.

Report Writer – __________________________ Set up the report in a Google doc so that members of the group all have access and can add

their research contributions to the report. Organize the final report to incorporate each member’s research and data into the final report so that the entire paper flows. Review and edit the writing of your peers for clarity and understanding. Review the Works Cited Page.

PBL Process Manager –

Keep track of the decisions, changes and progress that the groups has made in the PBL

process. Write the reflection on the PBL process at the end of the project.

We are remodeling our kitchen and need to select new appliances. How do we most

affordably purchase a refrigerator, dish washer, stove/oven, and microwave?

Problem – Based Learning Project: Step 1: Define the problem. Discuss all keywords, including all the aspects that you

will need to consider. What are some of the constraints of the problem?

Step 2: Brainstorm. Identify as many strategies as you can to solve your problem.We think it is possible to solve this problem by doing some of the following things:

We want to remodel our kitchen, but we want to replace all of our appliances. How are we going to do this? What should we prioritize? Should we look for a group sale of appliances? They do have those where kitchen appliances are bundled. Should we put a higher importance on certain appliances over others?

What else are we remodeling in the kitchen? Are we removing cabinets and installing new ones? Reusing the cabinets and restaining or painting them? Painting the walls? New floors?

Step 3: Determine possible solutions. Identify your individual solutions that answers the question. Three to four solutions are best.

The bundle options offers a variety of packages with different brand names that offer a discount because you are buying them all at once. There are options to swap pieces out for different option, but only a select few. Big box stores such as Home Depot, Lowes, and even Best Buy offer packaged deals. Looking at the two main appliance stores, Home Depot and Lowes, we looked at two different packages that offer similar items if different brand. With similar items selected the Lowes package is cheaper even with 5 yr protection, free delivery, installation and

haulaway fees selected. This is a great option if one prefers to buy brand new appliances, and not taking the chance that a opened box is damaged in some way, with professional guarantees and solid warranties. It puts us under budget, but it is still more expensive than an outlet store per item.

Step 5: Discuss, Refine, Test, and Evaluate. Evaluate your individual solutions to determine how they work for you compared to other solutions you have considered. Which is the best? Does each solution completely solve the problem as defined in step 1?

Step 6: Consider the Bigger Picture. Review the Impact, Feasibility and Reasoning of the Solutions. For each best solution, consider: Is your solution feasible? What other factors may impact your solution choice? Is your solution the best approach to solving this problem?

Step 7: Reflect. Review the process you went through to come to your decision. What things did you do for the first time, what things were most effective, and what things would you do differently the next time? This part will help the PBL Process Manager to write this section of the report.

All of the parts included on this worksheet should also be included in the paper. Include all of your research and the numbers you used to determine if your solution was feasible.

Make sure you refer to your sources within your paper. Include your works cited at the end of the report.

Edit and review your report before turning it in. Each member of the group should have the same version of the report to turn in. Only one report will be graded and all members will receive the same grade.
