Case Study on New York City Macroscope

Module blogs will focus on the following criteria. Blog posts should have a title, use format, have a minimum of 500 words, and be readable by a public or lay audience.

Content – Word minimum is met and content aligns with the topic and questions outlined. Full credit for a coherent synthesis of the questions posed. Do not simply answer the questions but write a blog that is organized with a clear thesis and supporting paragraphs. Consult with the  if you are not sure how to get started.
Originality – Writing is in your own words and you provide novel thinking or ideas. Do not reiterate what is written in the textbook or provided resources. A blog post is meant to synthesize and enhance what you have read.
Empirical Evidence – There are cited and referenced sources for all claims, assertions, and examples with in-text citations. Cite your sources, cite your sources, cite your sources.Please.
Picture or Graphic – Use of media is encouraged through images, graphics, charts, or videos. Blogs are multimedia and images or videos can illustrate the key concepts you are writing about. Don’t go overboard but feel free to use them to augment your narrative to make a point.

For the Module 2 Blog, the student will conduct a case study review of the New York City (NYC) Macroscope, a population health informatics surveillance system developed in 2013. Through the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene launched a program that uses aggregate EHR data from primary care providers to estimate the prevalence of selected disease conditions in NYC. Using data from electronic health records, the goal is for estimates to efficiently and cost-effectively characterize the burden of disease in NYC and changes in that burden over time. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, in partnership with the City University of New York School of Public Health is gathering the data from over 700 ambulatory care practices across the city through a developed informatics system.
A general overview of the NYC Macroscope is found on pages 136-138 in the textbook in Chapter 5. The general goal was to establish an surveillance system that aggregated EHR data and compared that data with NYC HANES survey data to see how close it was. If EHR data can be used for population health surveillance, then this opens up a tremendous new way to manage health in a community, state, and nation in a real-time approach.
After reading and reviewing all of the materials and links provided in the module resources folder, write your blog about the application of EHR data for population health surveillance and consider how these questions below set the stage for the NYC Macroscope development:

Is the NYC Macroscope interoperable and how do you know?
What types of health information exchange are part of the surveillance system?
How did they validate the EHR data against the HANES survey data?
What statistical issues did they have and how did they adjust?
Was meaningful use achieved and how do you know?
Do you think the NYC Macroscope is leveraging big data for disease information – why or why not?
How do you think cloud computing could impact the NYC Macroscope?
What kind of Macroscope data visualizations do you thnk would help give population health managers knowledge to make decisions?
