California Institute of Technology. NASA study finds that climate extremes Impact the land slide in Amazing Ways. NASA (2022). Accessed October 16, 2022.

This is a NASA study that reveals that climate extremes affect the land slide in unexpected ways. The study examines the way climate change is creating more volatile patterns of precipitation across the globe which is causing a decrease in precipitation or snow. The article also discusses the results of studies conducted throughout Northern California and Southern California on the expected slow-moving landslides. The article describes a shocking behavior, where California has more than 600 slow-moving landslides. The study examines ways that researchers could understand why landslides respond in the same way to rainfall or drought to determine the future of events.

Summary of the article

Dry seasons are becoming more frequent, and storms that are violent are more frequent as changes in the climate that impact the weather systems of our planet. Although dry and wet seasons can have a known effect on the levels of lakes and rivers but they also have unpredictable consequences for landslides with slow movement as shown by a research study that was conducted by the California Institute of Technology California (California Institute of Technology 2.). Understanding how landslides react to flooding and drought conditions allows scientists to anticipate how they will behave in the coming years, for instance, whether or not they will be able to collapse in a catastrophic way. Monitoring systems will feed information from a state-wide database that documents the landslide’s activity. Landslides that are slow-moving pose no risk for buildings or individuals in the short-term however, they could cause permanent destruction to structures and roads.
