RESEARCHED ANALYSIS OF ISSUE
WITHIN YOUR PROFESSION
For this essay, you will write a well-researched analytical essay that examines, explains and analyzes a current debate—also called dispute, disagreement or issue—within your future profession. Do not choose an academic or theoretical issue, but rather an ethical or occupational issue that deals with how you will practice your profession.
Explain the variety of the issue’s sides by illustrating with clear summaries and apt quotes. Do not argue a position; DO NOT SHOW A PREFERENCE: you should maintain an objective tone to all sides of this one debate within your profession.
Your essay will include background information that readers need in order to understand the issue as well as analysis of the opinions of various stakeholders.
* Your goal is to write a coherent, sophisticated analysis that will engage and inform your readers.
Your initial thesis attempt should provide an overview for the reader and predict what your paper is about. As you do your research and discover more on the topic, your thesis will change to include other perspectives you didn’t think about before. The thesis in your final paper will be that polished and finished statement (may be several sentences long) that synthesizes the various perspectives covered in the paper.
Analysis of Multiple Perspectives and/or Stakeholders (the body paragraphs):
In your research, you should interview a professional in the field as well as find articles (both scholarly and mainstream press) that support any claim you make and build a framework in your essay that not only analyzes the views of various stakeholders or perspectives but also examines the justifications made by these groups. Notice how the various groups argue. Ideally, your analysis will be sophisticated, in that it does not see only two sides of an issue, but sees multiple parts of a larger situation, while carefully examining or analyzing each part.
Your essay should follow a clear organization plan that is logical and easy for the reader to keep up with; your thesis statement should give readers a sense of this plan. Sentences and paragraphs should be coherent and focused, and transitions should help the essay to flow clearly.
Research, Support or Evidence:
Six sources (minimum)
Two scholarly/ peer reviewed
Three from mainstream research
Avoid blogs and wikipedia, and focus your mainstream research on respected news sources like The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, Time, etc.
B. One mainstream source is your interview with a professional in the field:
For locating a professional, Olinde Career Center recommends that you join Careers2Geaux, a database of more than 12,000 employer contacts.
Your aim is to persuade your audience of your deeper understanding of this issue; thus you must use credible sources to back up everything you say.
Your six sources should be credible, and at least two of the six will be scholarly ones.
You should show that you are able to evaluate the credibility in the selection of your sources.
Selected information should always be relevant to the central argument as well as quoted or paraphrased correctly to support each claim.
Sources should also be well integrated into developed paragraphs with quotes not just dropped in. USE LEAD- INS/ SIGNAL PHRASES.
Each quotation or paraphrase should back up or provide some support for your ideas, your analysis.
5. Formatting Requirements of the Paper:
Include an interesting and descriptive title that clearly announces the issue you are analyzing.
Must be a minimum of 1500 words (about five to six pages)
Paper will be in strict MLA format
Include an MLA Works Cited page containing an interview with a professional in your career field, at least 2 scholarly sources and 3 mainstream sources (for a total of six sources). MLA Works Cited page is not part of the word count.
6. Grading- 300 points:
Your essay will be graded on the following (see rubric posted separately):
Sophisticated analysis that recognizes more than two perspectives on the issue
Clear, effective organization
Insightful research with competent use of sources including smooth source integration
Correct conventions (style, grammar, transitions, etc.)
